"I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing." ~Socrates
The Sky Is Falling
Every generation over the past several centuries, has feared the end of the world. Each generation was certain that it would be the last. Most of their reasoning for such apocalyptic ideas, were based on religion. Christ's second coming. The horsemen bringing in the plagues has been imminent for a very long time.
This is true of my generation, as well.
Personally, I can admit that I am of that mind frame. Regardless of religion, science is showing this to be a reality.
I do not claim to believe that the end of the world is going to occur on my watch, but it most certainly will "soon".
It's the cycle of Earth, and it is inevitable. Remember, just because we are smarter than the dinasaurs, does not mean we're going to make it through the planet's rebirth.
My junior year of high school, the entire school was bussed to Denver to see the Aztech exhibit followed by a trip to the IMAX to watch "Ring of Fire". This ring (actually an arc) stretches from Chile, to Alaska and then veers to Japan.
This ring is responsible for the 1883 eruption of the Krakatoa volcano that killed 36K, the Mt St. Helens eruption of 1980, and (most recently) the earthquake that prompted the tsunami this past December that killed over 220K in a matter of hours. The latter being in Indonesia, which currently is home to 79 active volcanos. So active, that another earthquake recently hit and experts (Professor of Geosciences in Australia, Ray Cas and Mustapha Meghraoui of the Institue for Planetary Physics, just to name a couple) believe that a third eruption, a"super eruption", is indeed imminent (imminent meaning anywhere from the present to 1000 years from now). This eruption could kill up to millions and possibly move the earth into the next ice age, as it was the booster for the last ice age I can not doubt this as fact.
Perhaps you watched the BBC/Discovery Channel movie "SuperVolcano". This was based on the YellowStone volcano. The movie depicted what could happen when it erupts...pretty much destoying all of North America. Many are speculating that this is going to happen in the near future, however, in comparison to the activity of Toba (Indonesian supervolcano) today vs Yellowstone I can not be so sure.
In the month of March, there were 97 earthquakes at Yellowstone. Yes, that is a lot...but they have all been of a very small magnitude, the largest being 1.8.
Toba has been sparking quakes of extreme magnitude, thus my reasoning for being more concerned about it hitting before Yellowstone.
Just for trivia, let me point out that there are quakes and volanoes acting up all over the world. A recent eruption of Mt Aso in Japan, a 7.0 earthquake in the Japanese ocean floor, Mt St Helens blew some ash, a 6.4 quake in Iran and today, a 5.1 in California.
Perhaps I've just not been paying attention most of my life, but this seems like a lot of disaster in a brief amount of time. I can not doubt that the world as we know it is about to change dramaticly.
To sum up, take heed from Tim McGraw and live like you were dyin'.
